If you’ve browsed the Humane Society of Western Montana’s dogs this year, you may already know Milo’s face.

Milo is a 1-year-old, 42-pound medium mixed breed, and he has been at the shelter since February, according to his HSWM listing. That is a long wait for such a sweet boy.

A different dog at home

For the past couple of weeks, Milo has been in foster care with a member of the shelter’s staff, and HSWM says he has surprised them at every step.

At the shelter, Milo was too afraid of people to let anyone handle him. His favorite thing there was hanging out outside with his dog friends.

At home, he loves his foster dog friend just as much as snuggling on the couch with his person.

What Milo loves

  • Chewing bones, shredding stuffed toys and turning cardboard or paper into confetti
  • Playing with dogs. He’d like to play with cats the same way, but he respects the boundaries they set (his foster home has three cats).
  • His crate: he’s crate trained and comfortable in it for several hours at a time

He hasn’t quite figured out that shoes aren’t toys, but HSWM says he’s learning quickly.

The right home for Milo

Milo settled in quickly with the woman in his foster home. He hasn’t warmed up yet to the man there or to visitors, and extra people can feel overwhelming to him.

HSWM is looking for:

  • A home with a confident resident dog who can help Milo learn to trust his new people
  • A securely fenced yard, because he isn’t comfortable walking on a leash yet
  • Adopters with time and an abundance of patience while he settles into a new routine

HSWM’s behavior team is happy to talk with interested adopters and offers support after adoption.

How to meet Milo

Because Milo is in foster care, start with his listing on HSWM’s website, which has the contact for his foster, or call the shelter.

The Humane Society of Western Montana is at 5930 Highway 93 S. in Missoula. Adoption hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 1 to 6 p.m. The shelter is closed Mondays, Tuesdays and major holidays. Call (406) 549-3934 with questions.

According to HSWM’s adoption page, the adoption fee for an adult dog is $100. It includes age-appropriate vaccinations (with a rabies vaccine or voucher), spay or neuter surgery, a microchip, and a starter bag of food, a collar, an ID tag and a leash.
